Birkenhead Heritage Trail

Birkenhead Village Business Association manager Kae Condon is passionate about the history and heritage of the Highbury/Birkenhead area on Auckland's North Shore.

4 years ago Kae started creating an image map, adding photographs, news clippings and other items to a poster board whilst considering how to best present the area's history to locals and visitors alike. After conceptualising walks encompassing NZ's only sugar factory, Leroy's Bush the largest green stand of native bush and birdlife on the upper waitemata and most recently a Highbury heritage walk, Kae went on to develop brochures to promote and guide walkers. She also added details of the walk on the Birkenhead Village Business Assn website.

Birkenhead Heritage Panels selectionW

Now, in time for this year's Auckland Heritage Festival, Kae has developed the Highbury Heritage Walk into an interactive one. 15 heritage icons have been identified, for which panels have been created displaying a photograph and a brief description of the icon. A QR code links interested parties to a mobile website and additional information. Free, guided, interactive walks will be offered during the Heritage Festival.

Kae would like to acknowledge Lisa Trutman and Matthews and Matthews Architects for the wonderful source documents they were able to provide in putting this project together. Along with the Birkenhead Historical Society, All Saints Church, St Andrews Pres and Zion Hill Church and Birkenhead Primary School for providing the wonderfully rich source documents. North Auckland Research , Auckland Libraries and the Sir George Governor Grey, and Chelsea Archives Collection for source photographs.
