New Zealanders’ online spending rose by 8.5% compared to October last year. For the Quarter, our online spending was up 16% on the same three months last year.

With the country trading in a relatively normal state for the whole month, the growth in online spending has dipped from much higher numbers over the last couple of months. Total online spending in October was up just 0.6% from September and down 7.3% from August of this year. With Singles Day and Black Friday featuring in November, we would predict this recent trend to reverse.

The domestic online offering was the more popular purchase location. In October we spent 21.7% more at these e-retailers than this time last year. Similar to last month, domestic e-retailers made up 2/3 of our online spending.

This report concludes our monthly series. We thank you for being interested in our reporting and for engaging with us. We wish you all the very best for the upcoming Christmas period, and onwards into 2021.
